Family Fitness

Family FitnessIf you need to fit in your workout AND keep the kids entertained, then Family Fitness is here to help in Twickenham and Teddington! Classes are designed for families to have fun getting fit together. They are particularly suitable for children aged 2.5-4yrs, but other siblings are welcome too. This is how it works…

Family FitnessMeet:  The class starts off with a warm welcome and introduces the theme of the week, such as ‘Under the Sea’, ‘Fairytales’ or ‘The Circus’. Children are encouraged to interact and share their knowledge.

Make:  Next, the grown-ups spend about 10 minutes helping the children make a theme-related craft, such as a turtle headband or a wand.

Move:  The workout starts with a warm-up, including learning moves that will be used in the main workout, such as starfish star jumps and seahorses galloping. To add to the fun anyone can suggest a movement to add in, such as how a jellyfish might dance! Low-impact alternatives will be given throughout.
The instructor then tells a story, on-the-move, based on the theme of the day, where everyone joins in as the main character. As described above, normal exercise moves are disguised as actions the character must do to complete their adventure. Imaginations whir so much that nobody even notices they’re exercising! The fitness adventure is followed by fun, active games such as sharks (parents) chasing minnows (children) then swapping. Sound effects are highly encouraged!
The session ends with stretching and a chat about what everyone might carry on having fun with at home, using the craft item too.

There are lots of benefits for everyone in the classes. They help develop general fitness, strength, flexibility, balance, agility, coordination including jumping, throwing, catching and movement patterns.  Teamwork and independent working development are also supported.

The most important thing to the Family Fitness team is to stay active and have fun! If your child would rather free-style that is fine by them – as long we everyone keeps moving, it’s ‘Mission Fitness’ accomplished!

Classes run on Wednesdays and Fridays at Bushy Park Sports Club, Teddington, and on Wednesdays at Holy Trinity Church, Twickenham (opposite The Green).
