Strawberry Hill House

Strawberry Hill House was created by Horace Walpole in the 18th century, and is a truly magical example of Georgian Gothic revival architecture. It is like a fairytale castle in the middle of Strawberry Hill, with it’s bright white exterior, turrets, chimneys and beautiful stained glass windows. It’s a lovely place to while away an afternoon, enjoying the gardens and looking around the house.

The interior of the house is spectacular, based on the architecture of great gothic cathedrals and abbeys. Medieval tombs, arched doorways, rose windows and carved screens were models for Horace Walpole’s fireplaces, windows, doors and ceilings. He wanted a tour of Strawberry Hill House to be a theatrical experience, so you pass through a relatively gloomy hall and staircase before being met with the gorgeous detail and ornateness of the other rooms. The garden on the other hand is natural and informal, with a huge lawn flanked by trees and winding paths. It makes a great place for a picnic, with lots of shaded area in the trees for children to play, climb trees, and make dens!

Set within the arches of the house, the Cloisters Coffee House was taken over by Heavenly Dish in 2017, and serves salads, sandwiches and afternoon tea. We haven’t tried it yet, but if their old cafe on Heath Road is anything to go by, the food will be delicious! There’s also a shop selling a good selection of souvenirs, toys, and gifts.

There’s always lots going on at Strawberry Hill House, including activities for children and events for the whole family. In the school holidays they sometimes run creative and story workshops, as well as activities such as den building, scavenger hunts and teddy bears’ picnics. They also hold an annual Festival Of Fun for the whole family in May, plus other ad hoc events.
